Why being an LGBTQ+ wedding photographer is about more than the hashtag #loveislove
LGBTQ+ wedding photographer
The world of wedding photography is about more than just capturing beautiful moments - it's about celebrating love in all its forms and colors. As a wedding photographer, I have the privilege of being part of the happiest days of my couples' lives. For me, it has always been a given that love is love, regardless of who loves whom. But I had to learn that being a wedding photographer for LGBTQ+ weddings is about much more than just using the hashtag #loveislove.
My personal learning process
I still remember how strange it felt for me at first to mark my business as"LGBTQ+ friendly" on Google. Why should I highlight something so obvious? Love is universal, I thought, and shouldn't need any special labeling. At this point, I had already had a few same-sex couples in front of my camera. But my perspective changed radically when I heard an inspiring talk by Martina Lanotte at the Way up North Convention in Florence.
Authenticity and trust
The talk opened up a new world of understanding and empathy for me. It showed how important it is for people from the LGBTQ+ community to feel safe and accepted - especially on a day as important as their wedding. For many LGBTQ+ couples, it is not a matter of course that they are welcome everywhere. The fear of discrimination and rejection is unfortunately still real and omnipresent. In this context, clear labeling as "LGBTQ+ friendly" can be a strong signal of safety and support.
That moment of realization was a turning point for me. It's not just about photographing LGBTQ+ weddings - it's about being an active ally. For me, it means actively showing that I and my photography is a safe space for all couples, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
The importance of visibility and acceptance
Since that lecture in Florence, my approach has changed. I have learned that as a wedding photographer for LGBTQ+ wed dings, it is important to be sensitive and respectful of the needs and wishes of my LGBTQ+ couples. It is essential to work inclusively and ensure that every couple feels comfortable and accepted in my presence. This experience has taught me that it's not just about the aesthetics of the photos, but also about the stories and emotions they tell.
Conclusion
I am very grateful to Martina for these insights and proud to offer my photography and videography as an LGBTQ+ friendly wedding photographer. Every moment I capture for LGBTQ+ couples is a celebration of love and diversity, and that is something that goes far beyond a simple hashtag #loveislove.
