Great Ideas for a Gender Reveal
You are expecting a baby and want to celebrate the announcement of the little one's gender? Whether alone or with family and friends - there are great ways to make this moment unforgettable. Following I would like to give you ideas, as well as experience values of one of my couples, whose Gender Reveal I was hired to photograph.
WHAT IS A GENDER REVEAL?
The term "Gender Reveal" and the concept - who would have thought it - comes from the US. Translated, it means that it is revealed whether the unborn baby will be a girl or a boy. So it's a very exciting affair!
Often the whole thing is announced in the context of a party, a "Gender Reveal Party". It is similar to a baby shower, except that the gender is not known beforehand. In most cases, not even for the parents-to-be. It is revealed only at the party for you, in the presence of your favorite people.
So an emotional moment of surprise is pre-programmed AND therefore perfect for a photo shoot!
So you can either make it so, that:
you do not know the sex of your baby yet or
you know the sex and surprise your guests
KEEPING THE GENDER SECRET
You may be wondering, how do we manage to not find out our baby's gender until then, even during doctor's visits?
The best way to do it is like my wonderful couple Nohadra and Lucas:
They had the support of a friend who knew the sex and planned the unveiling.
Here are a few ideas for conveying gender without you noticing:
A trusted person comes with you to the gynecologist's office and consults with him or her there.
The couple is given an envelope at the doctor's visit, which contains the information about the sex.
After prior agreement between the couple and the doctor, the information is transmitted to the trusted person by telephone.
Either way, you'll need an ally who is informed and can organize the accessories for the announcement.
BOY OR GIRL? IDEAS FOR THE UNVEILING
There are several ways you can playfully reveal the gender and literally "drop the bomb".
Here are a few ideas:
Smoke box/ torches that produce either blue or pink smoke when lit (like at Nohadra and Lucas gender reveal).
Single color confetti cannons
Lots of balloons. You burst all the balloons together one by one with a needle. Only in one is confetti or powder. The color then reveals the gender.
A big balloon filled with pink or blue confetti. You burst the balloon with a pin.
You can also have a baked cake. The filling has a color that reveals the sex. When you cut it, the secret is revealed!
You might be wondering where you can best buy products for your Gender Reveal. My couple bought their smoke box and torches from Gender Reveal (you can find the link here).
As a cheaper DIY option, you can also buy Holi powder (colored cornstarch powder) or single-colored confetti and make your own surprise accessory (you can find the link here)
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME?
But when should you schedule your Gender Reveal? Nohadra, for example, was at the check-up in the 22nd week of pregnancy and had the shooting with me a week later. Usually from the 20th week of pregnancy there is an ultrasound appointment, which examines the anatomy of the baby and where the gender can be determined for the first time.
A PHOTO SHOOT CAPTURES THE MOMENT FOREVER
A photo shoot that captures your and your partners surprise and the reaction to it, is a nice alternative or even nice addition to a party. So this special moment will remain forever.
You can then easily share the result with your friends and family. A postcard or sweet message of the emotional moment during the announcement and your reaction is sure to please everyone of your loved ones.
Of course, a Gender Reveal is not mandatory and there are also parents who do not attach a great importance to finding out or revealing the gender of their baby before birth. A baby bump shoot can be a nice alternative to capture the happiness of you as parents-to-be in pictures :-)
